<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Building your first RGB pixel controller is one of the biggest milestones in the Christmas lighting hobby, and today we're using the RGB2Go Octa8 Controller to demonstrate this. Once you've assembled your first controller, you'll better understand how your entire display works and gain the confidence to tackle larger projects.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why the RGB2Go Octa8?</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This controller is compact eight-output pixel controller. Jason designed it for hobbyists who want a straightforward controller that's easy to build and maintain.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For many decorators, eight outputs provide plenty of flexibility for a small to medium-sized display while keeping the enclosure compact and organized. As your show grows, you may find a larger controller may come in hand, replacing the location where you're using the Octa8.  That's okay! Your Octa8 is now free to use for other areas to expand into without spending more money with a future addition. Remember, it's okay to have a backup controller!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Plan Your Layout Before Drilling</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the most valuable lessons in this build has nothing to do with wiring.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before drilling any holes, spend time planning:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Where the power supply will sit? </li>



<li>How will you mount the controller? </li>



<li>Which direction each pigtail should exit. </li>



<li>Where AC power or the network cable enter the enclosure. </li>



<li>How will you access everything later if maintenance is required.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Thinking ahead often prevents having to enlarge holes or relocate components later.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Guessing where components belong is a bad idea.  Create a simple paper template.</p>

<li>Check screw locations.</li>



<li>Ensure the enclosure lid will close properly.</li>



<li>Avoid accidentally blocking mounting screws.</li>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Building with Future Maintenance in Mind</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An experienced builder doesn't just think about today's project. Clyde suggest that you think about your next season.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Can you easily drop in a replacement controller?  Controller can break down, be ready with a spare. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Are the cable connection inside the box easily identifiable on the outside of the controller? You'll want to use some sort of labeling system.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One thing that Clyde remarked in his original video on building your First Pixel Controller, was the offset of the screw that held down the backer board.  The power supply placement was slightly off and it covered 2 mounting screw positions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A little extra planning now can make future upgrades much easier.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Wiring the RGB2Go Octa8</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As with any controller build:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Use quality copper wire.</li>



<li>Make secure terminal connections.</li>



<li>Route wiring neatly.</li>



<li>Leave enough slack for future maintenance.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Make sure you pay attention to wire color, terminal labels, and voltage jumper alignments (5v or 12v).  The Rgb2Go Octa8 controller can run both 5v and 12v pixels. Insure your controller's jumper is set correctly before powering on and connecting your pixels.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Routing the wiring efficiently and with enough slack can help make servicing the controller easier. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Waterproof Every Connection</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since controller enclosures spend months outdoors, weather protection is essential.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cable glands serve several important purposes:</p>

<li>Keep moisture out.</li>



<li>Provide strain relief.</li>



<li>Protect wiring from sharp edges.</li>



<li>Keep insects and debris from entering the enclosure.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Taking time to install cable glands correctly will improve the long-term reliability of your controller.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yes! The Octa8 controller runs from WLED firmware. You can do this simple setup through your cell phone or PC</p>

<li>What enclosure should I use</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">BudBoxes and MD-1500's are the most common and desirable box. Boxes used in this build are known as Demarkation Enclosures.  Some hobbyists use Ammo Cans (like the MTM AC50C-40 seen below).  You can see them in the video as well. They are large enough to hold 2 power supplies stacked and mount a 16 port controller on the top... along with 16 pigtail outputs.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Clyde suggests you order the MeanWell LRS 350-12 of the LRS 600-12.  These are the gold-standard when it comes to controller building. Some of those have been used for 15 seasons or more.  He's only experienced 3 generic power supply failures over the past 19 years of this hobby k</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the most important things beginners learn early is how power flows through the system.</p>

<li><strong>Negative / Ground (Black Wire)</strong></li>



<li><strong>Positive Voltage (Red Wire)</strong></li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The switch needed changed from 220V to 110V for standard U.S. household power.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That’s an important beginner tip because many new hobbyists overlook this tiny switch.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Taking a few seconds to verify your voltage setting can prevent major headaches later.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Wiring the Pixel Outputs</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Next comes wiring the pixel pigtails into Outputs 1 and 2 on the controller.</p>

<li>Data (Yellow)</li>



<li>Positive Voltage (Red)</li>
</ol>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Clyde explains how to identify the output terminals and properly tighten the connections to ensure reliable performance.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For many beginners, this is their first time physically wiring RGB pixels to a controller. Once completed, the entire setup suddenly starts feeling very real.</p>

We are assembling the Falcon V3 Receiver board into an enclosure so it is ready for the 2018 display season. While many people have already dismantled their display, we are already thinking about how to build next year's setup. The Falcon V3 Receiver board is used in combination with either the Falcon F48 or Falcon F16v2/v3 Differential expansion boards. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>What is power injection?&nbsp; Power injection is a process of which we add power to a string of pixels which does not have enough power to fully light the RGB nodes.&nbsp; RGB lights use either 5v or 12v power to run them. When there is not enough power, either because of distance or consumption, we must inject power to fully activate the spectrum of color being displayed.</p>
<p>In the 2015 Leechburg Lights display, we had to use power injection to any sets of lights that were not fully powered and show a "dim" color or tint at the end of the set.&nbsp; This video shows a new board produced by Andy Harrison that makes power injecting much easier than any homemade way I've found to date.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I'm learning more about how to run DMX data from the computer out to the light controllers (dumb RGB).&nbsp; I have found a promising USB adapter which can communicate with Xlights 4 software.&nbsp; What is awesome about this adapter is the price.&nbsp; As pictured it can run for around $25 with shipping.&nbsp; However, it requires both an enclosure and an RJ45 female connector (not included) to be soldered to the board.&nbsp; This pushes up the price a little, but to the hobbyist it is a good value to start with.</p>

Potentially this adapter can run 512 channels of DMX from most any computer with lighting software.&nbsp; This USB adapter could be less expensive than purchasing the leading brand of professional DMX adapters, typically at $50 up to $100 or more!&nbsp; I'm currently in the process of housing this adapter and making it available to other hobbyists.</p>
<p>So WHY am I testing a USB adapter?&nbsp; Well, I've been testing a multitude of adapters with marginal success at best.&nbsp; I want an adapter that will go from my windows XP computer to my Win 7 or Win 8.1 desktops.&nbsp; Many of the adapters I've ordered over the past month have not done this successfully.&nbsp; However, the higher cost DMX adapters all seem to work on every computer in my arsenal.&nbsp; This USB adapter (pictured above) seems to work on all my different OS platforms.&nbsp; I think I've found the common thread as to why the others did not work.&nbsp; If you are interested, please continue to read&nbsp; 🙂</p>
<p><em><strong>The Back Story:</strong></em><br />
I began testing out different USB devices around 2 months ago.&nbsp; I was first excited when I found some USB adapters on Amazon Prime and Alliexpress that worked great on Windows 7.&nbsp; But, the same adapter did not work with Windows 8 or 8.1.&nbsp; These adapters cost anywhere from $8 - $20.&nbsp; It took some digging, research, and a whole lot of time to learn what was going on.</p>
<p><strong><em>Warning! Geek Material Ahead - - - Proceed with caution! 😀</em></strong></p>
<p><em><strong>Cheaper items can work!</strong></em></p>
<p>My quest to find an inexpensive adapter for Light-O-Rama began in 2013 with the purchase of a $15 USB to RJ45 serial adapter.&nbsp; I was not so "schooled" in such devices and I could never get it to work for my intended purpose.&nbsp; So, this unit went into the junk drawer and sat for over 2 years!&nbsp; Last month, December 2015, I connected this device to the USB port and Windows automatically downloaded/installed the driver.&nbsp; I changed some settings, fired-up Xlights 4, and pressed "output to lights".&nbsp; Bam, the DMX controller was receiving signal from this adapter!&nbsp; However, my excitement was subdued when I plugged into my current main desktop computer, Windows 8.1, and the device did not work at all.</p>
<p><em><strong>What (or Who) is behind this?</strong></em><br />
In both cases, the driver was automatically downloaded and installed by Windows Update when the device was connected to the USB port.&nbsp; This driver is owned by a company called FTDI.&nbsp; FTDI is a manufacturer of micro processors.&nbsp; The driver assigns an ID to the device, as well as a unique "comm port".&nbsp; This ID is saved in the FTDI chip.&nbsp; Once this comm port is assigned, the computer can send data out to various remote devices.&nbsp; In my case, it carries DMX signal out to the DMX controllers.</p>
<p><em><strong>Episode IV: A New Hope!</strong></em><br />
When an overseas manufacturer wants to compete with a US product they may try to duplicate the micro processor to cut costs.&nbsp; If they can clone the FTDI chip and use the already-available FTDI driver, they wont have to pay for a license and signed driver through Microsoft.&nbsp; Many manufacturers were able to duplicate such a chip, and began selling them in all sorts of devices now found on eBay, Amazon, and countless other online vendors.&nbsp; The prices of these devices usually is much cheaper than a device with a genuine FTDI chip.&nbsp; And, in most cases, the consumer has no clue as to the authenticity of the components included with the device</p>
<p><em><strong>Episode V: FTDI Strikes Back!</strong></em><br />
FTDI is a private company who pays Microsoft a very pretty penny to have their drivers "signed" by Windows.&nbsp; Having a device with a true FTDI micro processor allows the end-user to connect their device to multiple computers.&nbsp; This means they can go from a computer with Windows XP, to a Windows 10 system and not have to worry too much about the driver. &nbsp; Their genuine chip generally works with all windows computers.&nbsp; Because of the flexibility afforded to the end-user, the micro processor manufacturer can charge a premium for their genuine chip.&nbsp; This premium is passed on to the consumer by way of a more expensive device.</p>
<p>FTDI began combating the growing issue of counterfeit micro processors with the release of a&nbsp; driver (v2.12.0.0) in July 2014.&nbsp; This driver update was able to render a cloned or copied FTDI chip useless by assigning it a zero-value.&nbsp; This is known as "bricking" or "soft-bricking".&nbsp; Anytime that same chip is connected to another computer, the FTDI driver would see this zero value saved in the micro processor and ignore the fake chip.&nbsp; With a useless device in-hand, consumers were angered!</p>
<p><em><strong>Episode VI: Return of the Consumer!</strong></em><br />
This action by FTDI affected the end-user greatly.&nbsp; One day your device worked just fine, then after a Windows Update your device would stop working.&nbsp; Users considered this an unethical business practice by FTDI.&nbsp; People felt their device was sabotaged and believe FTDI had no right to modify their personal property.&nbsp; Besides, how is the consumer to know the difference between a genuine chip, or a cheap knock-off?</p>
<p>FTDI back-peddled and replaced the driver with a new one that only allowed communication with genuine FTDI chip.&nbsp; Supposedly the user is to have a warning displayed which states the device can not be supported.</p>
<p>I have several different USB devices that claim to have an FTDI chip.&nbsp; Some of them worked perfectly on my old Win7 computer with a driver listed as pre-July 2014.&nbsp; However, they do not work on my current Win8.1 desktop.&nbsp; I have not received any notification from Window saying my chip is "fake", but I do know that the device does not work with the most recent FTDI driver (v2.12.12).</p>
<p><strong>Why the long Post?<br />
</strong>If you have read this entire report, then you are more than just my average visitor.&nbsp; Maybe my experience can help you make an informed decision.&nbsp; If you do purchase an inexpensive USB to DMX adapter from eBay, Amazon, or any other vendor either foreign or domestic, you will have been warned.&nbsp; While I had a number of successes, many of cheap FTDI-chip devices failed to work.</p>
<p>As I said earlier, I'm hoping to produce a reliable and inexpensive solution for new people getting into the hobby.&nbsp; I hope to spare you the grief when making a decision to purchase a cheap solution to run your RGB DMX lights using a computer with a Windows operating system.</p>
<p>At this time, I'll note that I have not tested these devices on a Linux Operating System.&nbsp; Apparently these devices are not as volatile on an OS other than Windows. Many people have claimed they work just fine on Mac as well.&nbsp; Let the buyer beware.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A number of people have asked me to create custom sequences for their holiday light shows.&nbsp; Today I have completed the first of hopefully many more to come.&nbsp; This sequence has around 20 hours of time invested into it.&nbsp; I could always spend more time to make it even better, but that is the perfectionist in me.&nbsp; I'm using Nutcracker software version 4.2.x to create the effects.&nbsp; Here is Carol of the Bells by David Foster.&nbsp; Enjoy!</p>
